To help prepare schools, mentors will be trained and supported in the summer term of 2021.

The Early Career Framework (ECF) is transforming the support and development offer for teachers at the start of their career. From September 2021, all early career teachers will be entitled to an ‘ECF induction’.

This entitles early career teachers to two years of support including:

  • Funded time off timetable (10% in year 1 and an additional 5% off timetable in year 2) to undertake a planned 131-hour curriculum of training, covering all the Early career Framework (ECF) ‘learn that’ and ‘learn how’ statement. This includes self-directed study sessions, mentor sessions and training sessions
  • A trained mentor, familiar with the evidence and practice of the Early Career Framework (ECF), with funded time off timetable to support the early career teacher

Schools will be encouraged by the Department for Education (DfE) to choose a Full Induction Programme (FIP) approach to induction. This will be a free-to-use programme that will offer high-quality training for early career teachers and their mentors delivered by an external provider that compliments the self-study and mentor sessions. This is the easiest option for schools. Schools opting for the Core Induction Programme (CIP) approach to induction will be able to draw upon the content but will need to design and deliver the early-career teacher and mentor training themselves. Schools opting to use a school-based programme of induction will receive no support from the Department for Education (DfE) in creating or procuring their own.

Details are published online by DfE, including the financial arrangements for schools.

In March 2021, the Department for Education (DfE) commissioned six national providers to deliver the Early Career Framework (ECF). Each will work with a small number of delivery partners to offer the programme in regions. Northamptonshire Teaching School Hub will be partnering with Teach First to deliver the ECF.

Express your interest

Headteachers are encouraged to express an interest in accessing the training and support offered by the Hub. Schools can do this be indicating their anticipated number of Early Career Teachers (Newly Qualified Teachers) they are likely to employ in September 2021. We appreciate this is still early in the current round of recruitment but the Department for Education require an indication of the demand in early April 2021. This will help us to secure support for your school.
